Back on the market and back in the kitchen

During the past year I've worked for a footwear company, at time it was good and even great but my work there is done and now I'm on the market for a new job. I've been looking for something in a similar field, and realized I haven't updated my lovely little blog since last time I was on the market in 2009! Which makes me sad, but, I'll try to update more regularly.

Anyway, to my point. I'm a girl who hasn't ever had to make a complicated meal, and who isn't the best of cooks - also, did I mention I'm on a budget?

Anyway I made chicken last night and it took under an hour of prep time and 3 hours of cooking time. I headed to Albertsons and bought a 5lb. chicken for about 5 dollars - they must have been on sale.

I used to go on these short walks with my boyfriend, and I noticed there was a huge rosemary bush just growing wild, so we took about half a cup of rosemary.

Here is my recipe.

Use olive oil and rub it all over your bird

Use the juice from 1 lemon and drizzle it on the bird

Use the remaining lemon and place it in the bird's cavity

1/4 onion inside the cavity

5 cloves inside the cavity

1/2 cup of rosemary - washed

If you're going to cook potatoes, dice them and use some of the chicken fat to season the potatoes but do it on another plate. Potatoes on the same pot will result in lemony potatoes, they are ok but not great.

Anyway here is my picture. I cooked at 325 for 2:30 -3 hrs depending on over.

As many of my ten readers may know, I've been on the job market since 2009; some of the time freelancing for a few days, these days back on track on the application train.

I often drink and cry, or drink and laugh while sharing my stories with my friends. They laugh, lend a sympathetic ear and overall tell me to write these stories down so I can reflect back on what I've learn. What I've been learning is that editing is my friend, getting there 35 minutes early in Los Angeles is pretty much like getting there on time, and no matter how good you think an interview goes, you're left feeling high and dry, waiting for the guy to call you, like a cheap one night stand.

Today, I interviewed with an ad buy agency, as a junior ad buyer. Lately, I've been feeling like my experience is broad but could go deeper, but let's muse later. The gal that interviewed me was smart, young, direct, and polite. We clicked over where I lived, how she's lived there in the past, and like any good alumni, told me which college she attended. I felt my skill set was a good fit, and as we spoke I saw the single engine Cessna that I call my career struggle.

My question is this, How do you sound interested without coming off as an airhead? And how do you answer questions directly and earnestly without sounding like a tight ass?

Hedda Gabbler - Ibsen

I just saw two versions of Hedda Gabbler, one was the 1981 version and my personal favorite is Glenda Jackson portraying Hedda in the 1975 version. Glenda Jackson's interpretation is much more powerful because the casting is much more solid, she also has an arrogance about her that carries the character well.

Hedda's character plays such a dominant role in the relationship with George, and even with the other characters in the play. Her upbringing challenges the notions of free will. And the thematic mirrors are very consistent with the naturalism of the time.

On a purely superficial and costuming standpoint. The sleeves on Glenda Jackson and the silk blouses are so regal and they truly contrast against George's very scholarly and homely appearance.

Hedda Gabbler, written by Ibsen, was seen as quite controversial at the time. The societal norms were much more rigid during this time period, in which naturalism stood strong as an art form. The threat of scandal was great both Ibsen's personal life after the play was published and in the play itself which led to Hedda's demise.

The hero of this little crime drama has a brain about the size of a raisin, so of course she has no idea what happened. She's a reptile — but who cares? There's a drug suspect in custody, so let's credit her with the arrest.

Her name is Turtle No. 72.

And this is her story:

She is an Eastern box turtle, one of 135 counted by researchers in the park in recent years, and one of three puttering in the woods with tiny radio transmitters affixed to their shells, so scientists can study their movements. Turtle No. 72, six inches long, roams an area of about 50 acres near the Washington D.C.- Maryland border, meandering no faster than a few hundred feet per hour on her three-inch legs.

As a rule, being a turtle, she minds her own business.

Ken Ferebee, a National Park Service researcher, has been monitoring Turtle No. 72 for seven years, occasionally venturing into the woods to see her. Since Turtle No. 72's purpose in life is limited pretty much to finding a berry or bug to eat, there's no telling where in her about 50-acre range she might wander on a given day.

A few weeks ago, her little turtle brain guided her to a sun-splashed clearing deep in the woods. And that's where she was on the afternoon of July 14 — at the northern end of the 1,754-acre main park, far from any trail — when Ferebee, for the first time in nine days, decided to pay her a visit.

"I was walking in the woods, following the signal with my receiver, trying to find the turtle, and I walked into an area where some large trees had fallen down," he recalled Thursday. "So there's a big hole in the tree canopy, so there's a lot of light getting down to the ground, and there's a lot of vegetation growing there."

He saw Turtle No. 72 in the clearing and moved toward her.

"But as I'm walking, I could see a patch of bare soil that didn't look quite right. And when I got closer, I could tell it had been cleared and some plants had been planted. They looked like they'd been grown somewhere else and then actually replanted in the park."

Suspicious vegetation — about 10 plants, some four-feet tall.

"I could tell they were marijuana plants," said Ferebee, 46. "I've seen pictures of the leaves before. I've actually seen marijuana plants before, too. ... And I was a little surprised to see them right there. They've been found in the park before, but it's been a long time."

He said, "I called the police to come see, because I knew they'd be interested in that."

A Park Police spokesman, Sgt. Robert Lachance, said Thursday that investigators covertly watched the pot patch from time to time until the alleged grower, a Montgomery County, Md., man, showed up to tend to the plants. The suspect, Isiah Johnson, 19, of Chevy Chase, was arrested Wednesday and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

An investigator, speaking on the condition of anonymity yesterday because the case is unresolved, described Johnson as a college student (it's unclear what school he attends) with no arrest record before Wednesday. In terms of criminal history, "he's a nothing, a nobody," the investigator said, adding that Johnson seemed frightened and "was very, very cooperative" during a police interview.

Johnson was in the Montgomery County jail Thursday night awaiting transfer to Washington for a court appearance. The pot in the park amounted to a pound and a half, worth about $2,500 wholesale and roughly $6,500 when peddled on the streets, police said.

"Quite unusual circumstances," Lachance said.

As for Turtle No. 72, age unknown, she is still in the park, munching on insects.

Pardon the culo joke, but once we went to a burlesque show and that was actually someone's stage name. So I attended the Frida exhibit in SF, and though the lines were long the art was worth it. The real gems are the home movies that were shot, you don't get a clear idea of who Frida was at any point, but her beauty and essence really shines through in the short films.
